Radios & Communications

MWIPT utilizes portable and mobile radios to effectively communicate between team members.

As scanner enthusiasts ourselves, we understand some people may enjoy listening to business radios. Because of this, we’ve included all of our radio information below. Unfortunately most of our radio communication is now private or encrypted, however there are a few remaining TalkGroups or frequencies that can still be picked up here and there.

Motorola WAVE PTX

As of early 2025, we’ve made the switch to the Motorola WAVE Broadband PTX system. This system allows us to add/remove radios quickly, provides coverage for those that live outside of ERS’s coverage area, communication between divisions, and requires no involvement from Motorola partners. All of our photographers carry TLK-100, TLK-110’s, have TLK-150’s mounted as in-car radios, or opt to utilize the WAVE Mobile app.

Motorola MOTOTRBO - UHF

We no longer use these radios for primary communication, however these radios prove to be useful in broadband dead-zones. We’ll continue to use these for Car-to-Car/Simplex communication on licensed partner frequencies (see below). These frequencies are licensed in both Indiana and Ohio for statewide simplex use.

Some radios use ERS’s Connect+ system. The remaining radios left on this system are typically only used for management. Encryption is per-radio, not per-talkgroup. Most of our radios are encrypted as of 2024, however there are some radios that aren’t.

ERS TalkGroups

  • TG 33150 “Statewide 1”
  • TG 33151 “Statewide 2” (Will eventually simulcast WAVE PTX)

Simplex Frequencies (Partner license)

  • 451.8 (TG 1) “Car-To-Car”
  • 451.8125 (TG 1) “Operations 1” (ENC)
  • 456.8125 (TG 1) “Operations 2” (ENC)
  • We have 2 other licensed frequencies, however these are not programmed in most of the newer radios, thus we don't use them.
  • We use Car-To-Car as our primary simplex frequency in most situations. We’ve found that this can usually be picked up for about 1-2 miles while in the city, and several more miles depending on the location.

Software & Systems

GPS Tracking & Incident Tracking System (ITS)

MWIPT utilizes a custom ITS system, which allows us to track and share incidents, information, and much more with all users on the system.

Our custom incident and GPS mapping systems integrate directly with our custom “ITS” software, but this information, as well as “ITS” specifics will remain private.

100% of our internal software is completely custom. We use these tools to track incidents, and make all footage/photos available to news outlets quickly.
